The project director of the Democracy in Check Institute, Ana Julia Bernardi, is in Brasilia this week to participate in the Strong Democracy Agenda, an initiative of the Pact for Democracy aimed at strengthening and protecting democratic institutions in Brazil.
During the event, Ana Julia, alongside Liz Nóbrega, Strategic Communication and Innovation Coordinator at Aláfia Lab, presented the report “Below the radar: disinformation in far-right groups on WhatsApp and Telegram in the 2024 elections”. The document was delivered to Victor Durigan, coordinator of Combating Disinformation at the Supreme Federal Court (STF), and Mariana Araujo, secretary of Social Communication at the Court.
The study, developed by the Democracia em Xeque Institute in partnership with Aláfia Lab and coLab, proposed to investigate the circulation of misinformation in messaging applications during the electoral campaign of the 2024 Brazilian municipal elections, focusing on the analysis of the circulation of links in WhatsApp and Telegram groups and revealed that 40% of the links about the STF shared in WhatsApp groups contained misinformation.
