Digital methods for understanding bias and disinformation campaigns on YouTube, WhatsApp and Telegram during elections
Written December 13, 2023
During the international event Disinfo and Elections in the Global Majority, organized by Marcelo Alves and Jonathan Ong in Rio de Janeiro in November 2023, the “breakout group” Digital Methods Democracy in Xeque taught by João Guilherme explored new trends and sensitive issues in the use of digital methods to identify algorithmic biases, combat disinformation campaigns and online influence operations.
Through original studies and analysis techniques involving YouTube, WhatsApp and Twitter, topics such as biases in search and recommendation algorithms, virality in messaging applications, bots in electoral contexts and the use of complex network analysis to understand platforms were explored. The event brought together researchers focused on discussing disinformation campaigns in Brazil, the Philippines, South Africa, India, Moldova, among others.
